2022-2023 Sheep Breeding, Lambing Records and Management Goals
Our continuing goal is to monitor and maintain two different lines of sheep based on the lineage of two different rams. During the past few seasons (2019 – 2023), we have used Bellwether Winston #515 to continue and enhance the WINSTON line and a younger ram, Knoll Acres Ivan #1601 (removed in 2020) to form the IVAN line.
However in 2019, we have acquired a young new ram, Springwood Ebb #5052, purchased from Pam Hand. Ebb brings us some new genetics as well as carried RR genes for scrapie resistance. In the 2020-2023 seasons, we used Ebb with a selected group of ewes to form the EBB line phasing out and replacing the Ivan line. Ivan was sold January 2020 to a neighbor and will no longer be used in breeding at Knoll Acres.
Due to the size of our facilities, we limit the number of breeding ewes that we try to carry each year. We have found that an optimal number of ewes ranges between 8-10 with the ewes divided between the breeding lines.
In October of 2017, we did some testing on our flock and took blood samples from our breeding stock. Testing for the presence of OPP (Ovine Progressive Pneumonia) was negative for each sheep. We also tested for Scrapie Susceptibility via Codon 171. Based on that testing most of our breeding ewes were QQ (highly susceptible), however we have not seen any evidence of Scrapie in our flock. As noted below, Winston’s 131 codon is RR (resistant to scrapie). Consequently his son’s and daughters all tested QR (moderately susceptible).

Recent (Oct 2017) testing for OPP (Ovine Progressive Pneumonia) showed Winston was negative based on ELISA serum test; testing done by HRAHL (Regional Animal Health Laboratory, Virginia Dept of Agriculture and Consumer Services). Based on Codon 171 (Scrapie Susceptibility), Winston has the RR (resistant) codon. The codon testing was done by GenAlysis Laboratory.
